President of Iceland visits Maine

Saturday, June 1, 2013

The President of Iceland was in Maine Friday, serving as keynote speaker for Maine International Trade Day. President Olafur Ragnar Grímsson said we all need to start tilting our world view to the north.

The melting of the polar ice caps is opening a northern shipping route, one that is shorter than the traditional route to the south. It's one of the main reasons the Icelandic shipping company Eimskip has made Portland it's major U.S. port of call.

President Grimsson said, "It is a fascinating transformation, almost a global transformation and you are fortunate, like we are in Iceland, to be in a key position."

Governor LePage says the state is working to improve its infrastructure to take advantage of the investment by Eimskip.
