Eimskip want to ensure safe and secure transportation of your cargo and make sure that our operation and working environment are safe. Correct weight information is important for all parties in the transportation chain.

What is verified weight?

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted new global regulations under the Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS) that require shippers to provide verified gross mass (VGM) for every container prior to container being loaded on vessel. The requirements become effective on 1st July 2016. See information here.

General Eimskip process

  1. Shipper requests booking for cargo and informs if they will provide verified weight or if they require weighing service

  2. Shipper weighs container/cargo and provides shipping line with verified weight information
-Please note information of tare weight is located on container door.
-Contact your local office for further information.
  1. Shipper delivers cargo or requests pick up

Approved weighing methods

Shipper may use one of two methods to determine the verified weight of the packed container:

Method 1

The shipper may weigh or have a third party weigh the packed, sealed container.

Method 2

The shipper may weigh or have a third party weigh all cargo items, pallets, dunnage and other packing and securing material to be packed in the container, and add the tare mass of the container marked on the container.

How can shipper provide verified weight information? On what format?

  1. Shipping instructions via ePORT, customer portal. Provided by shippers authorized person according to SOLAS regulation.

  2. E-mail/Fax where verified weight is clearly stated. Provided by shippers authorized person according to SOLAS regulation.
